Klonopin belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. It has a pronounced anti-seizure, central muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, sedative and soporific effect.
Klonopin blocks the release of neurotransmitters that provoke neuronal excitation. As a result, the drug inhibits the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, which may reduce the frequency of seizures, or even completely eliminate them.
Description of Klonopin
Klonopin (Clonazepam) can suppress pathological epileptic activity in the brain, due to which this drug is used in the treatment of seizures and epilepsy syndromes. It can be used as mono- and adjunctive therapy.
Clonazepam can be prescribed to the patients with the following health problems:
- absence seizures (only in patients who have failed to respond to valproic acid or succinimides);
- akinetic and myoclonic seizures;
- focal seizures;
- tonic-clonic seizures;
- status epilepticus (in this case, parenteral administration is required).
You should take into account that an increase in the frequency of seizures is possible in patients who have more than one type of epilepsy. In this case, patients should take several antiepileptic drugs at the same time or increase the dose of Klonopin.
Who should not take Klonopin?
Like any other drugs, Klonopin has contraindications. Patients with the following diseases may experience health deterioration during the treatment with Klonopin:
- chronic respiratory failure;
- alcoholism;
- drug dependence (including in history);
- liver and kidney failure;
Side effects
Klonopin may cause side effects, which are divided into common and rare.
Common side effects of Klonopin are drowsiness, ataxia and behavioral disorders.
Rare side effects of Klonopin include:
- uncontrolled eye movements;
- dysarthria;
- muscle weakness;
- tremor;
- hallucinations;
- respiratory depression;
- swelling;
- fever;
- hair loss, etc.
Klonopin during pregnancy
Patients who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should try other drugs. However, abrupt withdrawal of Klonopin is not allowed in women who have been successfully using Klonopin for the treatment of epileptic seizures for a prolonged period. In this case, rapid discontinuation of Klonopin can cause life-threatening status epilepticus.
In individual cases where the withdrawal of antiepileptic therapy or drug substitution doesn’t pose a serious threat to the patient’s health or life, Klonopin can be discontinued before or during the pregnancy.
NOTE! Even mild seizures can pose hazards to the embryo; therefore, if such seizures occur, patient should carefully weigh all risks. Do not stop taking Klonopin without consulting your doctor. All decisions regarding the dose reduction and drug substitution/withdrawal must be discussed with your doctor.
Dependence and withdrawal syndrome
Side effects of Clonazepam can also be manifested in mental and physical addiction.
Abrupt withdrawal of Klonopin can cause abstinence (withdrawal syndrome).
- insomnia — patient finds it difficult to fall asleep and become increasingly sensitive to the slightest light, sound and tactile stimuli;
- aches all over the body;
- anxiety (up to mood swings);
- emotional lability;
- nervousness;
Some patients also develop suicidal thoughts. In patients with severe forms of withdrawal, discontinuation of Klonopin (as well as alcohol withdrawal) can cause seizures and psychotic reactions.
